The Vietnam Military History Museum is a repository of over 150,000 artifacts, including some of Vietnam’s most treasured historical relics. These artifacts encompass various eras of Vietnam’s military history, from ancient times to the contemporary period. The museum’s exhibits are structured across multiple sections, each offering a unique perspective on Vietnam’s military evolution.
A Modern Museum with Interactive Exhibits
Since its establishment in 2019, the museum’s new location covers an area of 386,600 square meters. The museum’s address is located in Tay Mo and Dai Mo wards, Nam Tu Liem district, bringing an upgraded experience to visitors.
The museum uses modern display methods, combining 3D maps, interactive screens, QR codes and audio guide systems to make learning about military history more engaging. Audio-visual elements include more than 60 video clips of historical battles, notable campaigns and biographies of important figures in Vietnam’s military history.
Notable Artifacts and Outdoor Exhibits
The Vietnam Military History Museum is divided into multiple sections, with outdoor and indoor exhibits providing visitors with a thorough understanding of the country’s military legacy. Key highlights include the 45-meter Victory Tower in the main courtyard and a vast selection of military vehicles and weapons from both the Vietnamese and opposing forces.
The outdoor left wing area displays Vietnamese military vehicles and weapons from various conflicts, including the First Indochina War and the Vietnam War. Notable artifacts here include an 85mm gun, a 57mm anti-aircraft gun, a PT67 tank with serial number 555, and a MiG-17 fighter jet.
The museum’s right wing area displays military vehicles and equipment used by the French and American armies during their invasions. Notable artifacts include the M-107 self-propelled gun, also known as the “King of the Battlefield.” Visitors will also find aircraft left behind by the US military, such as the A-37, F-5E, CH-47, and C-130, along with a variety of bombs and ammunition.
In addition, the museum’s exterior includes symbolic displays representing Vietnam’s aspirations for peace, with sculptures of doves and green saplings sprouting from airplane wreckage. This installation reflects Vietnam’s resilience and desire for peace, underscoring the cost of freedom and the nation’s deep-rooted wish for harmony.
The MiG-21 “Silver Swallow” – A National Treasure
One of the museum’s most impressive displays is the MiG-21 fighter jet, affectionately named “Silver Swallow,” with serial number 4324. Suspended by cables and seemingly ready for takeoff, this aircraft symbolizes Vietnam’s determination to defend its skies during the Vietnam War.
It has an impressive combat history, credited with downing 14 American aircraft. Each red star on the jet represents one of its victories, with this iconic aircraft being officially recognized as a National Treasure by the Prime Minister in 2015.
